    Description

olgers Coffee is a brand of coffee produced in the United States and sold around the world. The precursor of the Folger Coffee Company was founded in 1850 in San Francisco, California, as the Pioneer Stream Coffee and Spice Mills.  The founding owner, William H. Bovee, saw an opportunity to produce roasted and ground coffee ready for brewing.  Before that, Californians had to purchase green coffee beans, and roast and grind them on their own.
    B
ovee hired James Athearn Folger from Nantucket as a carpenter.  In 1850s, kerosene began to offer a cheaper alternative to whale oil which had been Nantucket’s lifeblood, resulting in the re-purposing of many of its ships to bring coffee beans from South America to San Francisco.  After working At Bovee’s mill for a year, James had saved enough money to stake a claim in the company and headed out to mine for gold.  He carried samples of coffee and spices, taking orders from stores along the way.  Upon his return to San Francisco, he became a full partner of the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills.

n 1872, he bought out the other partners and renamed the company to J.A. Folger & Co.  When J.A. died in 1889, his son J.A. II, stepped into the role of president of the Co. at the age of 26.  Under the mid-20th century leadership of Peter Folger, who must be another son, the brand became one of the principal coffee concerns in North America.  In 1963, J.A. Folgers was acquired by Procter and Gamble and in 2008 was acquired by The J.M. Smucker Co.  Folgers established brand colors, white lettering against a dark background is still used.

his card was a salesman’s appt. card and features Extract Vanilla, an early spice product for Folgers.  The salesman F.F. Krause “will call on or about Jan. 6, 1915”.  It is a UDB that is in good condition with some creasing in more than one place and some staining on the image, but it is a presentable, rare card.  The reverse is clean with a stamp torn off.
The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.
Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.  Corrections appreciated.
